The History of RCD Espanyol

Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona, founded in 1900, is a traditional club from Barcelona, Catalonia. The club plays in blue-and-white striped shirts and has historically served as an alternative to the city’s more dominant club, FC Barcelona. Espanyol has a strong local presence and is known for being closely connected to the Catalan community, with a more down-to-earth and popular profile than the city’s largest club.

Titles and triumphs
Espanyol has never won La Liga, but the club has won the Copa del Rey four times, most recently in 2006. On the international stage, Espanyol reached the UEFA Cup final twice (1988 and 2007) but was defeated on both occasions – most recently after a penalty shootout against Sevilla. These results, however, cemented the club’s reputation as a respected participant on the European stage.

Home ground: RCDE Stadium
Espanyol plays its home matches at RCDE Stadium in Cornellà-El Prat, which opened in 2009 and has a capacity of around 40,000 spectators. The stadium is modern and serves as a gathering point for the club’s fans, known as “Pericos”. The atmosphere is intense, especially during matches against FC Barcelona.

Historic players
The club has had several notable players over the years. Raúl Tamudo is the club’s greatest icon and all-time top scorer. Other important players include Dani Jarque, Iván de la Peña, and Sergio García. Dani Jarque, the club’s former captain, is still remembered as a central figure in the club’s identity after his tragic death in 2009.

The city of Barcelona
Barcelona is Spain’s second-largest city and one of Europe’s most famous metropolises, known for its architecture, culture, and football history. While FC Barcelona is often seen as the city’s global football brand, Espanyol represents a strong local and alternative voice in the city’s football life.

Rivals
Espanyol’s biggest rival is, of course, FC Barcelona, and their encounters are known as the “Derbi Barceloní”. The rivalry reflects differences in size, culture, and self-perception, but the matches are always intense and full of pride.

Espanyol today
Espanyol currently plays in La Liga, where the club works to consolidate its position and regain stability after some years of ups and downs between the top two divisions. The club focuses on talent development, solid defensive organization, and a close connection to its loyal fan base.

With its long history, passionate supporters, and unique identity, Espanyol is considered one of Spain’s most traditional clubs – a club that proudly represents both Barcelona and Catalonia on the national and international football stage.
