The History of Villarreal CF

Villarreal Club de Fútbol, known as “El Submarino Amarillo” (The Yellow Submarine), was founded in 1923 in the small town of Villarreal in the Castellón province. The club plays in yellow shirts, which gave them their distinctive nickname. Villarreal is an example of a club that has risen from humble roots to become a regular member of the top half of La Liga.

Titles and Triumphs
Villarreal’s greatest triumph came in 2021, when the club won the UEFA Europa League after a dramatic final against Manchester United, decided by a penalty shootout. The club has never won La Liga but has finished in the top four several times, qualifying for the Champions League. Among the highlights is the 2005/06 Champions League semifinal, where Villarreal surprised the whole of Europe.

Home Stadium: Estadio de la Cerámica
Villarreal plays its home matches at Estadio de la Cerámica, formerly known as El Madrigal. The stadium, inaugurated in 1923, has a capacity of around 23,000 spectators. Despite its relatively small size, the atmosphere is intense, and it has become a fortress for the club, with fans creating a close and passionate environment.

Historic Players
The club has had several notable players who helped raise Villarreal to international status. Juan Román Riquelme was a key figure in the 2006 Champions League campaign, while Marcos Senna was crucial both for the club and the Spanish national team. Later, players such as Santi Cazorla, Giuseppe Rossi, and Gerard Moreno have also left their mark on the club’s success.

The City of Villarreal
Villarreal is a small town with about 50,000 inhabitants, but the club plays a huge role for the local community and region. Located in Castellón province in the Valencian Community, Villarreal CF has gained international recognition, becoming a proud representative of the area.

Rivals
Villarreal’s biggest rival is Valencia CF, with their matches known as the “Derbi de la Comunitat.” The rivalry reflects both sporting competition and regional pride. The club has also played intense matches against other Spanish giants during its many years in La Liga.

Villarreal Today
Villarreal is now a consistent presence in La Liga and often participates in European competitions, where the club has built a reputation as a strong and competitive opponent. The team continues to combine talent development with solid performances both domestically and in Europe.

From a small-town club to European success, Villarreal CF has become a symbol of ambition, hard work, and unity – a club that continues to challenge the biggest teams in both Spanish and international football.
