The History of SL Benfica

Sport Lisboa e Benfica, often simply called Benfica, is one of Portugal’s most traditional and successful clubs. The club was founded in 1904 in Lisbon and traditionally plays in red shirts with white shorts. Throughout its history, Benfica has established itself as one of Portugal’s biggest clubs and has an enormous and loyal fan base known as “Os Encarnados” (The Reds).

Titles and triumphs
Benfica is Portugal’s most winning club, having won the Primeira Liga more than 37 times. The club has also won the Taça de Portugal numerous times and has been a regular participant in European competitions. Internationally, Benfica is known for its two European Cup victories in 1961 and 1962, defeating Barcelona and Real Madrid in the finals. These triumphs cemented Benfica as one of Europe’s most prominent clubs in the early 1960s.

Home ground: Estádio da Luz
Benfica plays its home matches at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, inaugurated in 2003, with a capacity of around 65,000 spectators. The stadium is famous for its electric atmosphere, especially during matches against major rivals like Sporting CP and FC Porto, and serves as a symbol of the club’s pride and history.

Historic players
Benfica has nurtured and attracted many legendary players. Eusebio is the club’s greatest icon and one of the best players in football history. Other notable figures include José Águas, Humberto Coelho, Rui Costa, and Nuno Gomes, all of whom contributed to the club’s national and international success.

The city of Lisbon
Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and largest city, with around 500,000 residents in the city and over 2.8 million in the metropolitan area. The city is known for its maritime history, culture, and vibrant football tradition. Benfica is a central symbol of the city’s identity and pride.

Rivals
Benfica’s main rivals are Sporting CP and FC Porto. Matches against Sporting CP are called “O Clássico de Lisboa” and are among the most intense in Portuguese football. Encounters with FC Porto, known as “O Clássico,” also have historical significance and often decide the championship.

SL Benfica today
Benfica regularly competes in the Primeira Liga and remains one of Portugal’s most dominant clubs. The club combines talent development from its renowned academy with strong scouting and international experience. Benfica aims to maintain its position as both a national and European powerhouse.

With its long history, impressive triumphs, and passionate fan base, SL Benfica is considered one of Portugal’s most iconic clubs – a club with pride, identity, and ambitions for the future of football.
