History of Real Madrid

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol was founded in 1902, but the club changed its name in 1920 when King Alfonso XIII gave them the name Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. Throughout history, Real Madrid is the most successful club in the history of the Champions League, where they can boast of a total of 13 victories. The closest pursuer is AC Milan with 7 titles. Real Madrid is one of three clubs that have never been relegated. The other two are Barcelona and Athletic Club.

Real Madrid was from the beginning one of the strongest football clubs in Spain, and as it also came to represent the capital and the Spanish central power, it came into opposition to FC Barcelona, which is the strongest club in Catalonia. These two clubs have been competing for more than 90 years to determine which of them is the best team in Spain.

Real Madrid and Champions League

Real Madrid is one of the most successful teams in the history of the Champions League, having won the tournament 14 times. This is twice as many as AC Milan, who are in second place with seven titles. In the last 10 years, Real Madrid has shown why they can call themselves the kings of the Champions League. In five seasons (between 2013/14 and 2017/18), Real Madrid won four Champions League titles. No team has won the Champions League twice in a row since 1992, but Real Madrid made the impossible possible. Not only did they defend their Champions League title, but they actually won the tournament three years in a row. This is the story of how Real Madrid made the impossible possible.

La Decima

In the 2013/14 season, Real Madrid was placed in a group with Galatasaray, Juventus, and FC Copenhagen. Real Madrid went undefeated in the group stage, topping the group with 16 points. Surprisingly, Juventus actually got knocked out of the group stage, and Galatasaray advanced instead. In the Round of 16, Real Madrid faced Schalke 04. Real Madrid easily won the first leg 6-1, with two goals each from Benzema, Bale, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The second leg was more or less the same. Real Madrid won 3-1, and with an aggregate score of 9-2, they advanced to the quarterfinals, where they faced another German team, Dortmund.

In the first leg against Dortmund, Real Madrid quickly took the lead with a goal from Gareth Bale. With two more goals from Ronaldo and Isco, Real Madrid won the first leg 3-0. The second leg proved to be anything but easy. This was the first Real Madrid match where it looked like they might actually lose the entire game. With two goals in the second half from Marco Reus, Dortmund was only one goal behind Real Madrid, needing to force the match into extra time. Real Madrid used dirty tricks to prevent Dortmund from scoring the third goal. Real Madrid ended up with five yellow cards, but they prevented Dortmund from scoring the third goal, and therefore, Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals.

The semifinal was against the German champions Bayern Munich. In the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid easily won 1-0 against Bayern Munich. Many expected Real Madrid to have problems at the Allianz Arena. But Real Madrid surprised everyone. With a 4-0 victory, with two goals each from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid advanced to the final, where they would face their local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Champions League Final 2014

The 2014 Champions League final was played in Lisbon, Portugal, at the Estádio da Luz stadium. The match was between the defensive Atletico Madrid and the offensive Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid was looking to win their first Champions League title, while Real Madrid could win “La Decima” (the 10th). Surprisingly, the match started with an Atletico Madrid goal. Center-back Diego Godin scored the first goal, and Atletico went straight into defense mode. It looked like the tactic was successful, and Atletico Madrid could win their first Champions League title. But then Sergio Ramos scored at the 93rd minute and headed Real Madrid back into the game. Real Madrid forced Atletico Madrid into extra time. It was clear that the Atletico Madrid players were too tired and couldn’t play anymore. Real Madrid ended up scoring three goals in 10 minutes and won their 10th Champions League title.

Real Madrid’s 3-Peat

Real Madrid’s 3-peat is probably the most impressive triumph of a football club ever. To win the Champions League 3 years in a row is remarkable. It all started in 2015 when Rafa Benitez was fired as coach and Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane was hired. The only coaching experience Zidane had was with Real Madrid’s B team.

Zidane’s first Champions League game was against A.S Roma. Real Madrid easily won this match with an aggregate score of 4-0.

The quarter-final against Wolfsburg was a game that surprised many. Real Madrid went to Wolfsburg’s home ground and lost the match 2-0. Real Madrid dominated the whole game, but with 2 quick goals from Wolfsburg, they took a 2-0 lead to Bernabeu. Real Madrid had to find 3 goals in the game to progress to the semi-finals. Luckily for Real Madrid, they had Cristiano Ronaldo on their team. With 2 goals from Ronaldo within 17 minutes, they were already level in the match. They just needed to find the 3rd goal to progress. In the 77th minute, Modric was tackled just outside the box. Cristiano Ronaldo took the ball, placed it, and shot a fantastic free-kick that went straight into the net. Ronaldo completed his hat-trick and Real Madrid was ahead in the game. Real Madrid won the match and would meet Manchester City in the semi-finals.

The match between Real Madrid was one of the few “boring” Real Madrid games. The first leg at Etihad Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw. In the return leg at Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid won 1-0 after Gareth Bale’s shot was redirected by Fernando into Manchester City’s goal. Real Madrid would play the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid for the 2nd year in a row.

The Madrid derby was a rematch of the Champions League final in 2014. Real Madrid dominated early in the game, and Sergio Ramos scored in the 20th minute. However, Atletico Madrid was awarded a penalty in the 47th minute. Luckily for Real Madrid, Antoine Griezmann missed the penalty. Yannick Carrasco would come to Atletico Madrid’s rescue when he scored for them in the 79th minute. After a goalless extra time, the match went to a penalty shootout. The key moment in the shootout came when Juanfran missed his penalty. Ronaldo stepped up and converted the decisive penalty, which secured Real Madrid’s first Champions League in their 3-peat period.

Champions League 2016/17

Real Madrid’s 2016/17 Champions League campaign proved to be their best, although they did not have the perfect start. Real finished in second place in their group, as Dortmund won the group. However, Real Madrid had to face Napoli in the round of 16. They won the first leg 3-1 with goals from Benzema, Kroos, and Casemiro. The second leg was just as easy as they won 3-1 again against Napoli. Real Madrid easily progressed to the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid faced German champions Bayern Munich. Ronaldo proved to be important in this tie, scoring two goals in the first leg to win 2-1 against Bayern. Once again, in the second leg, Ronaldo was crucial, scoring a hat-trick to win 4-2 against Bayern Munich and progress to the Champions League semi-finals, where they were set to meet Atletico Madrid.

Once again, Mr. Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo, came to Real Madrid’s rescue. With a hat-trick, Real Madrid won 3-0 against Atletico Madrid in the first leg. The second leg was more problematic. With two quick goals from Saul Niguez and Griezmann, Real Madrid was already down 2-0. Atletico Madrid only needed one goal to force the game into extra time. Isco came to Real Madrid’s rescue and scored in the 42nd minute. This meant that Real now had to play in the Champions League final for the second year in a row and could be the first team to successfully defend a Champions League title.

The Champions League final was against Juventus. The Champions League final started well when Ronaldo scored the first goal in the 20th minute. Mandzukic scored one of the best Champions League final goals to make it 1-1. However, Real Madrid came back with two quick goals from Casemiro and Ronaldo, making it look like they would easily win the final. It all became much easier when Cuadrado received a red card for pushing Sergio Ramos. Asensio scored in the 90th minute, winning the game 4-1. Real Madrid was the first team to successfully defend a Champions League title.

Champions League 2017/18

Once again, Real Madrid could not win their group as Tottenham topped the group with 16 points. Real Madrid faced a star-studded PSG side, featuring Neymar and Mbappe. Real Madrid’s form was also not the best, having lost el clasico 3-0, being knocked out of Copa del Ray, and losing to small Celta Vigo in the league.

Rabiot gave PSG an early lead, but Ronaldo scored two goals for Real Madrid to take the lead. Marcelo scored in the 90th minute to give Real Madrid a comfortable lead at Parc des Princes. Ronaldo and Casemiro scored two goals in the second leg, giving Real Madrid a 5-2 win over PSG.

The quarterfinal was against Juventus. The match is particularly remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo’s fantastic overhead kick, which was so good that even Juventus fans stood up and applauded. Ronaldo scored the first two goals, after which Marcelo added a third goal for Real Madrid. Real Madrid comfortably won 3-0. However, the second leg was much more dramatic. With two goals from Mario Mandzukic and a mistake by Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, which Blaise Matuidi took advantage of and scored, the match was tied 3-3. The most dramatic moment of the game came in the 93rd minute, when Real Madrid were awarded a controversial penalty. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was shown a red card for going crazy over the referee’s decision to award the penalty. Reserve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczeny came in to try to save the penalty, but he was unsuccessful. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the penalty and sent Real Madrid through to the semi-finals.

The semi-final was against Bayern Munich. Real Madrid had problems scoring against Bayern Munich, and with a 1-1 result at half-time, Zidane had to find inspiration from the bench. Marco Asensio proved to be the player that Zidane trusted, as he scored the decisive goal, which allowed Real Madrid to take a 2-1 lead to the Bernabeu.

In the second leg, Bayern Munich started quickly. Arjen Robben was tackled in the penalty area and awarded a penalty, which Lewandowski converted. Ronaldo had to save Real Madrid again, as he headed the ball into the net late in the match, which gave the lead back to Real Madrid. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos scored an own goal, which made the score 3-3. The match went into extra time. Ronaldo completed his hat-trick in extra time with two goals, sending Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League final.

The final was between Real Madrid and Liverpool. Real Madrid were the heavy favorites, but Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could not be underestimated. The match started badly for Liverpool when their star player Mohammad Salah was forced to leave the match early due to a shoulder injury. Real Madrid also took the lead when Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius made a huge mistake and passed the ball directly to Karim Benzema, who scored Real Madrid’s first goal. Liverpool, however, came back into the game when Sadio Mane scored. Once again, Zidane had to look to his bench for inspiration. This time it was Gareth Bale. Bale completely turned the game around with two goals, including a fantastic overhead kick, and a long-range strike that Karius couldn’t hold on to. Gareth Bale won Real Madrid their 13th Champions League title.

Real Madrid completed the three-peat, a feat that no other team has accomplished. Since then, Real Madrid has also won the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool.
