A little bit about PSG
Paris Saint-Germain, or simply PSG, is one of the most iconic football clubs in the world, based in the heart of Paris, France. The club was founded in 1970 as a result of the merger between Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. Since then, PSG has become one of the most successful teams in French football history.
In the early years of the club, PSG struggled to make a significant impact in the French league. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that PSG began to make a name for themselves, winning their first major trophy, the Coupe de France, in 1982. The club continued to improve in the following years and won their first Ligue 1 title in 1986.
However, it was in 2011 when the club underwent a transformation that would take them to the next level. Qatar Sports Investments took over the club and began investing heavily in both the squad and the infrastructure. The move paid off almost immediately, as PSG won their first Ligue 1 title in 19 years in 2013. Since then, they have dominated French football, winning the league title seven times in the last nine years.
But PSG’s ambitions don’t stop at domestic success. The club has spent vast sums of money on world-class players in order to become a major force in European football. With players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi, PSG has one of the most potent attacking lineups in world football.
In recent years, PSG has come agonizingly close to winning the UEFA Champions League, reaching the final in 2020 only to lose to Bayern Munich. But with their star-studded lineup, PSG is considered one of the favorites to win the competition in the coming years.
If you’re planning a trip to Paris to watch PSG play, getting to the Parc des Princes stadium is easy. The stadium is located in the southwest of Paris, and can be reached by metro or bus. The closest metro station is Porte de Saint-Cloud, and there are several bus routes that stop nearby.

PSG Matches
Most of PSG’s league games are dominated by the team. In the last 10 seasons, PSG have won the Ligue 1 title 8 times. However, in the Champions League, it sometimes seems like they are cursed. Every year, PSG becomes stronger and stronger, but they keep being eliminated from the Champions League in the most remarkable ways. But with the addition of Messi and now that he has hit form, it seems that PSG actually has a huge chance of winning the tournament. But let’s take a look back at the most remarkable PSG games in the Champions League.
Barcelona 6 – 5 PSG
The most remarkable PSG game in the Champions League was probably the round of 16 in 2017. The first game was played at the Parc des Princes. Both teams were in good form and expected to win the game. PSG scored the first goal at the 18th minute from a free kick by Angel Di Maria. Julian Draxler made it 2-0. Di Maria and Cavani scored the 3rd and 4th goals, and thus PSG took a 4-0 victory over FC Barcelona. PSG was almost guaranteed to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals. No team has ever lost by 4 goals and still advanced in the Champions League.
Return match
The return match was to be played at Camp Nou. Surprisingly, 96,290 fans showed up to support FC Barcelona, even though they were 4-0 behind. FC Barcelona got off to a quick start when Luis Suarez scored Barcelona’s first goal at the 3rd minute. At the 40th minute, Layvin Kurzawa scored an own goal and made it 2-0 to Barcelona. Barcelona found hope and started to press on, and PSG could not handle it. At the 50th minute, Neymar was tackled in the penalty area and won a penalty for Barcelona. Lionel Messi converted the penalty and made it 3-0. Barcelona was only missing 1 goal to have made the impossible possible and forced the game into extra time. However, things did not go badly for PSG. At the 62nd minute, Cavani scored a very important away goal for PSG, making Barcelona now have to score 3 goals in half an hour to advance. The impossible task thus became harder for Barcelona, and the longer the game went on, the more impossible the chance looked for Barcelona to score 3 goals.
However, the next FC Barcelona goal would come at the 88th minute when Suarez was controversially awarded a penalty. Neymar took the penalty, scored, and made it 4-1. At the 91st minute, Barcelona was awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area from a difficult angle. Neymar took responsibility for the free-kick and scored one of the most beautiful free-kicks in Champions League history. Barcelona now had 4 minutes to find 1 more goal. In the dying minutes, Barcelona had to find their luck. At the 95th minute, Neymar dribbled into the field and sent a hot cross into the box. It looked like the cross had missed all the players. But luckily for Barcelona, Barcelona’s right-back, Sergi Roberto, was at the end of the cross and scored Barcelona’s 6th goal. Barcelona advanced, and PSG let a 4-0 lead slip away.
Manchester Untied 3 – 2 PSG
This was another game that looked impossible for PSG to lose. The first match was played at Old Trafford, and PSG won 2-0 with goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe. Manchester United‘s star player, Paul Pogba, received a red card in the 89th minute, which meant he couldn’t play in the return leg at Parc des Princes. No team had ever come back from a home defeat by two goals or more in the Champions League. However, PSG managed to create problems for themselves again.
In the return leg, Manchester United fielded a very young team, with many of the first-team players absent. Nonetheless, Manchester United quickly took the lead. A mistake by PSG goalkeeper Buffon in the second minute allowed Romelu Lukaku to score Manchester United’s first goal. But PSG came back and scored their goal through Bernat in the 12th minute. Once again, PSG’s defense made a mistake, and Lukaku made it 2-1. Manchester United had over an hour to score the third and decisive goal to progress. PSG went on the defensive and didn’t concede any more goals. However, disaster struck in the 93rd minute. Diego Dalot took a long shot, which hit PSG defender Kimpembe’s hand. The referee went to VAR and awarded a penalty to Manchester United. Marcus Rashford took a cool penalty that was impossible for Buffon to save, and Manchester United won the game 3-1 and progressed to the next round of the Champions League. Once again, PSG found themselves in the unlucky part of history.
Champions League Final 2020
However, PSG finally made it to the Champions League final in 2020. The opponent was the German champions Bayern Munich. The Champions League final between PSG and Bayern Munich was played at Estádio Da Luz in Lisbon, behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe. Both teams created chances and opportunities in the game, but neither could score. It wasn’t until the 59th minute that Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman scored the game’s only goal. PSG lost the final, and their Champions League curse continued.
