The match ended 0-0 and went to a penalty shoot-out, just like in the Carabao Cup final, three months earlier. This time the penalty shoot-out was much shorter than last time. Chelsea missed two penalties, which meant that Tsimikas could score the decisive penalty (which he did), and Liverpool could win their 8th FA Cup.

This was Liverpool's first FA Cup trophy since 2006. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp became the first German manager to win an FA Cup final. Chelsea, however, set an unfortunate record as the first team to lose three consecutive FA Cup finals.
