Stadion Rajko Mitić was inaugurated in 1963 in a match between Red Stare and Rijeka, in a match, Red Star won 2-1.
The semi-finished stadium could house approx. 74,000 spectators, and when it was completed a year later, the capacity was an impressive 110,000 spectators.
Due to its large capacity, it was quickly compared to the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro and is also known as the Marakana.
In 1976, the stadium Rajko Mitić hosted the final of the European Championship, and in this match, the Czechoslovakian Antonin Panenka scored the legendary penalty kick - the panenka.
Over the years, the capacity has dropped to the current 55,538 and is seats only.
